Hints and Ideas for Cleaning and Polishing your Jewelry
We are all looking for new ideas to make our lives easier. Maybe you will find
an easier way to clean and polish your jewelry from this list-some of the
ideas are new, but we also have some old hints too.
1. You can maintain the beauty and luster of almost any piece of jewelry
by regularly cleaning and polishing it.
2. Most stones and their settings can be cleaned with liquid jewelry
cleaner, just be sure to follow the instructions on the package.
3. You can use warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Let the jewelry
soak in this for a few minutes, then use a soft brush to gently scrub the
jewelry. After rinsing, dry the jewelry with a soft cloth and then polish it
with a piece of chamois cloth.
4. Do not use toothpaste or any abrasive cleaners. These could put
scratches on the settings and remove some of the glow of the jewelry.
5. An old way to clean real diamonds was to boil the diamonds with a
small bit of detergent for 5 minutes, Allow them to cool before removing from
the water-never plunge a hot diamond into ice cold water. Do not boil jewelry
that the stones have been glued in-the heat will soften the glue and the stone
may fall out.
6. Diamonds may be soaked in a solution of 1 tablespoon ammonia and 1
cup of warm water for about 5 minutes. Dry with a soft cloth and polish if
necessary.
7. Silver polish removes tarnish from silver jewelry very easily. Follow
the package instructions for a beautiful shine for your jewelry and also your
silver serving pieces.
8. When doing house cleaning it is best to remove your jewelry. Some of
the harsh cleaning products may affect the beauty and glow of your jewelry.
This also avoids accidentally bumping your jewelry on a hard surface and
damaging the stone or the prongs that hold the stones in place.
9. Pearls can be buffed with a soft cloth or just wear them against your
skin. The heat and oil from your body help pearls maintain their beauty.
10. Sterling silver and silver beads and clasps can be buffed with a
soft cloth to revive their shine.
